KAUAI HABITAT AND DOW COMMITTED TO KEEPING HOMES AFFORDABLE ON KAUA‘I

On Friday, August 28, 2015, 25 volunteers from Dow AgroSciences arrived at the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity baseyard to support Kaua‘i Habitat’s vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Knowing that affordable housing is one of the world’s most pressing challenges, Dow teamed up with the Habitat organization in 1983 and they have been building comfortable, affordable homes and changing lives together ever since. On Kaua‘i, Dow and Kaua‘i Habitat began partnering in 2012 and Dow lends support to Kaua‘i Habitat in many ways, including partial house sponsorship, product donation and employee volunteer work crew builds.

This year the employee volunteer work crew took on several projects including framing walls for four homes that will be constructed in Phase II of the upcoming ‘Ele‘ele Iluna subdivision. The subdivision will provide homes for 107 families in need of an affordable home. Other projects included weeding and maintenance of the grounds, as well as painting projects in and around the Kaua‘i Habitat ReStore. The ReStore provides financial support for Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity’s building projects by selling gently used donated goods at a discount to the community.

“Corporate sponsorship is fundamental to the success of larger projects like the ‘Ele‘ele Iluna subdivision,” stated Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Stephen Spears, “It’s essential for us to be able to keep home prices affordable on Kaua‘i.”

The build event was extremely successful. By the end of the day all projects were completed due to the collaboration of the two organizations. It is the goal of Kaua‘i Habitat to find more corporate sponsors as dedicated to combating the affordable housing crisis as Dow has been.

About Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity

Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, an ecumenical, nonprofit, Christian housing ministry. Its mission is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world – one house at a time on Kaua‘i – and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Through volunteer and homeowner labor, and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses. The affiliate is also a proud partner agency of Kauai United Way.

Kaua‘i Habitat features two main home building programs: New Home Construction Program and Repair and Renovation Program. Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity also operates ReStore®, which sells new and used discounted building and construction materials and household items. Proceeds from ReStore® support Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity’s mission to build decent, affordable housing.

Since 1992, Kaua‘i Habitat has built 117 affordable homes and made critical repairs to 28 existing homes for Kaua‘i families whose household income is between 30-80% of the median Kaua`i income. Because the critical need for affordable housing continues to persist on our island, Kaua`i Habitat has pledged to scale up our capacity and build our next 100 homes before the next decade. Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity is pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the Nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.
