The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas unveiled the addition of a photography mural in its lobby Thursday, December 10, 2015. The image, taken by local filmmaker and photographer Joel Guy, captures the iconic lo‘i (taro patches) of Hanalei with a backdrop of the island’s dramatic landscape and majestic mountains, including Hihimanu, Nāmolokama and Māmalahoa.
Guy, who grew up in Ha‘ena on the north shore of Kaua‘i, has long been inspired by the landscape he was asked to capture by The Westin Princeville. Of the particular morning he took the photo, Guy says the weather report had called for severe weather.
“But, the sky parted, a beautiful waterfall appeared, and it ended up being the most beautiful morning,” he said. “It just shows that you never know what the day will bring.”
In addition to welcoming The Westin Princeville’s guests to the resort, General Manager Denise Wardlow hopes the mural will spark interest for guests to learn more about the history and culture of the island.
