Note from the authors : “The authors of Next To Normal feel strongly that the profanity in the play is necessary to portray these particular characters fully and honestly, to give a real sense of the depths of their feelings and the stakes involved in their interactions, and to paint a realistic picture of how people under pressure speak.”
Next To Normal deals with the serious topic of mental illness and the steps one family goes through to find “normal.” Some of the topics that are addressed in the play include bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, mania, delusions and hallucinations, and electroconvulsive therapy.
