The Kauai Nēnē Habitat Conservation Plan (KN HCP) will hold the first in a series of a public talks in Hanalei at 6:00 pm on January, 28, 2016. Dr. Christian Vlautin will provide information on the ecology of the endangered Hawaiian Goose, the Nēnē.
By the middle of last century, human presence had reduced Nēnē numbers state-wide to 30 individuals. After many years of diligent conservation efforts, the near-extinct Nēnē are growing in number on Kaua’i. The increases in Nēnē numbers mean that they are starting to live in areas they have not been for hundreds of years. Nēnē are protected by both Federal and State laws that prohibit actions that may hurt, harm, harass or otherwise alter their natural behaviors. The Kauai Nēnē HCP is meeting with residents and business throughout Kaua’i. They will be presenting information on Nēnē biology and its recovery in Kaua’i. They are also seeking input on residents’ experiences with Nēnē on Kauai. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Kauai’s Nēnē.
Meeting will be held 6:00pm Thursday, January 28th at:
Hale Halawai ‘Ohana O Hanalei
Hanalei Community Center, Hanalei, HI 96714
This meeting will focus on general Nēnē knowledge, providing details about their history and biology. All are welcome to learn and share thoughts. Future meetings will specifically address any concerns citizens may have about how the Nēnē may impact the social, economic, or agricultural communities on the north shore.
Members of the public are encouraged to contact the Kauai Nēnē HCP regarding their thoughts or questions about Kauai’s Nēnē by clicking the “Tell us your thoughts about Kauai’s Nēnē” link at http://kauaiNēnēhcp.com or by emailing info@kauaiNēnēhcp.com.
Kauai Nēnē Habitat Conservation Plan (KN HCP): The KN HCP is coordinating an island-wide Kaua’i Nēnē Habitat Conservation Plan to address any issues related to Nēnē conflicts with agriculture, public safety, and private property on the Island of Kaua’i and to support of the conservation and recovery of the Nēnē.
