The Opening is the culmination of a six-year, half a million dollar project conceived by Executive Director, Mark Jeffers and designed by Kim Duffett, O’ahu, that includes a beautiful garden with a statue of Hanapepe born, peacemaker–the late senator, Spark M. Matsunaga.  The project has been funded by many donations from individual and grants from the 2006 Hawaii State Legislature, Atherton Family Foundation, Cooke Family Foundation, Kauai Aloha Endowment Fund, Group 70 Foundation, Alexander and Baldwin Foundation, WCIT Architects and a USDA Community Facilities loan/grant.

The opening, fundraising event supports ongoing educational programs, school visitations for all ages, school tours, and summer internship and enrichment programs.  Of special interest is the completion of the outdoor theatre, an upgraded recording studio facility, the decorative outdoor gate and, ‘going green’, Storybook Theatre’s Solar Photovoltaic System that get us off the grid!

“ The culmination of this project opens us up for presentations by local artists and scholars, schools utilizing our facility for classes and workshops, local and visiting people learning about The International Garden for Peace, cultural and educational programs,” says Mark Jeffers, Executive Director of Storybook Theatre for more than 30 years.

The celebration will open with Doric Yaris, traditional Kumu Hula, West Side and his hula halau; with a performance by esteemed slack key recording artist, Cindy Combs and the honored Cyril Pahinui.
