Save the Date for DENIM DAY, Wed. April 27, 2016.
Proclamation ceremony presented by Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr. at Lihue Civic Center Mo’ikeha Courtyard 12 Noon
In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a number of local organizations are rallying next week at the Līhu‘e Civic Center Mo‘ikeha rotunda.
“Denim Day serves as a call to action for everyone to wear denim as a sign of protest against sexual violence”, said Edie Ignacio-Neumiller, who is a member of the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i and the Kaua‘i Committee on the Status of Women (KCSW).
Ignacio-Neumiller encourages the public to demonstrate their support for survivors especially on Denim Day. She said, “No matter what, clothing is never an excuse for sexual violence.”
The Zonta Club of Kaua‘i, Zonta Club of Hanalei, KCSW, and the Kaua‘i Violence Prevention Coalition are collaborating on this event.
Denim Day originated in Italy where a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans thereby implying consent. The women of the Italian Parliament protested the decision by wearing jeans to work.
