‘Equal Means Equal’ Screening Tomorrow at KCC (w/ trailer)

The public is invited to attend a free screening of “Equal Means Equal” directed by Kamala Lopez, which won the Best U.S. Documentary Audience Award at the 2016 Traverse City Film Festival.

The film examines the inadequacies of the current laws in the U.S. that claim to protect women and presents a strong argument for the urgency of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment.

The documentary will be shown Friday at the Kaua‘i Performing Arts Center at Kaua‘i Community College in Puhi. The doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the movie starting at 6 p.m.

Following the film, YWCA Executive Director Renae Hamilton-Cambeilh will lead a panel discussion. Panelists include Prosecuting Attorney Justin Kollar, Ret. Gen. Mary Kay Hertog, KCC instructor Alexis Erum and YWCA prevention educator Snow Carapetyan.

A purse sale will also be taking place at the event to help raise funds for the YWCA’s domestic violence/crisis programs and women’s financial education.

The event is sponsored by the YWCA of Kaua‘i and the Kaua‘i County Committee on the Status of Women in recognition of October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the YWCA USA’s Week Without Violence campaign.
