USPS Cancels Relocation of Līhu‘e Post Office

The County of Kaua‘i today applauded the decision of the United States Postal Service canceling the relocation of the Līhu‘e Post Office from its Rice Street location to the Līhu‘e Carrier Annex, according to a county news release.

“I want to thank the efforts of the Planning Department, the Līhu‘e Business Association, the residents and businesses of Līhu‘e, Senators Brian Schatz and Mazie Hirono, and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard for standing strong to keep the Līhu‘e Post Office on Rice Street,” Kaua‘i Mayor Derek Kawakami said in the release.

In a letter to Kawakami received this month, the Postal Service reversed its decision to relocate the Līhu‘e Post Office to the Līhu‘e Carrier Annex after various public meetings, discussions, and comments were made in support to keep the Līhu‘e Post Office at its Rice Street location.

County Planning Director Ka‘āina Hull said the Planning Department — with support from the Līhu‘e Business Association, our Congressional delegates in Washington, D.C., and residents and businesses in the area — spent the last two years working with the USPS to analyze the overall impacts the removal of postal services at the site would have on the surrounding community.

“While the County recognizes the USPS’ ability to consolidate and relocate services, we commend the agency’s final decision to preserve its services to the community at the current Rice Street location,” Hull said.
