Public access to Motor Vehicle Registration, Drivers Licensing Division sections to close March 25 to April 3

Effective March 25 through April 3, and subject to extension as necessary, the County of Kaua‘i will be temporarily closing public access to the Motor Vehicle Registration Section and the Drivers Licensing Division. The health and safety of our associates is our primary focus. This is also consistent with the County’s messaging on social distancing and meant to encourage people to stay at home.
Pursuant to Supplementary Emergency Proclamation dated March 16, Gov. Ige suspended Hawai‘i Revised Statute (“HRS”) 286, related to Highway Safety. The following are some of the laws that are currently suspended with the intention of encouraging the public to stay at home:

·         Expiration of Licenses is suspended under HRS 286-106. The County of Kauai will be offering extensions for residents with expiring credentials. Licenses and identification cards that expire in the months of March, April, May, and June are automatically covered by a 90-day extension. Licenses that expired prior to March are not eligible. The extension is effective immediately. Licenses will no longer be effective for driving after the 90 day extension period unless they are renewed.  The extension includes all valid Kauai driver’s licenses, learner’s permits, and identity cards. For applicable licenses, late fees will not be assessed during this period. This does not apply to licenses that have already expired.

·         Title transfers under HRS 286-52 will not be assessed late transfer penalties from the period February 25, 2020 through April 3, 2020, subject to extension as necessary.

There remain several ways to pay registration renewals and sewer payments.  We will still be accepting payments through our drop box window located to the right of the glass doors at the Kapule building and mail will still be processed timely. The Safeway kiosks remain open as well as the online payment methods for sewer and vehicle registration renewals, both of which are free for public use. Sewer payments are also accepted at www.kauai.gov/sp. Motor vehicle registration payments are also accepted at https://mvr.ehawaii.gov/renewals/kauai.
The phone lines will remain open as well to answer questions and make reservations for future appointments. For questions, please call Motor Vehicle Division at 241-4256 or Drivers Licensing Division at 241-4242.
We apologize for the inconvenience that we know this will cause but are confident that the public will understand that we are prioritizing the health and safety of our associates and the general public.
